The Opportunity

We are working with a leading energy trading business looking to hire a Product Control professional to join its team near Hamburg.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in energy, commodities, trading, or financial markets who wants to work closely with traders and senior stakeholders in a commercially focused environment.

The role will sit at the intersection of Trading, Finance, Risk and Operations, providing independent control over the trading portfolio and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of P&L, positions and exposures.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and deliver daily P&L reporting and analysis across the energy trading portfolio.
• Produce and explain daily P&L attribution, including price, volume, FX, new trades and other movements.
• Perform independent validation of trading positions, valuations and exposures.
• Investigate and resolve P&L and valuation discrepancies in collaboration with Traders, Risk, Finance and Operations.
• Review and challenge mark-to-market valuations, curves, pricing inputs and reserves.
• Support month-end and year-end financial close processes.
• Ensure appropriate controls are in place around trade capture, valuation and P&L reporting.
• Provide insightful analysis to traders and senior management on portfolio performance.
• Work closely with Risk Management on market risk, exposures and valuation movements.
• Assist with the development and improvement of product-control processes, systems and reporting.
• Support the implementation of new products, markets and trading strategies from a control perspective.
• Contribute to automation and process improvements across the Product Control function.

About You

We are looking for a commercially minded Product Control professional with experience in energy or commodity trading.

You are likely to have:

• Experience in Product Control, P&L Control, Valuation Control, Trading Finance or a closely related function.
• Previous exposure to energy or commodity markets — power, gas, oil, emissions or related products would be advantageous.
• Strong understanding of mark-to-market valuation, P&L attribution and trading positions.
• Excellent analytical and numerical skills.
• Strong Excel skills; experience with SQL, Python, Power BI or other data/automation tools is a plus.
• The ability to investigate issues independently and communicate findings clearly to Traders and senior stakeholders.
• A proactive, questioning mindset and the confidence to challenge trading and valuation results where appropriate.
• Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the commercial picture.
• Fluent or strong professional English; German would be advantageous.
